Bird cherry origin

The wild cherry (Prunus avium) is the most important wild ancestor of cultivated sweet cherries. It is native to Europe, North Africa, and West Asia and prefers to grow in mixed deciduous forests, at forest edges, and in warm, sunny locations. In Germany, it is one of the typical forest tree species and is also selectively managed for forestry purposes.

The tree can reach a height of 15 to 25 meters and is particularly impressive in spring with its abundant display of white blossoms. Its fruits – small, red to black cherries – are edible and serve as an important food source for many bird species, insects, and small mammals. The wild cherry is considered an ecologically valuable tree, as it supports a wide variety of animal species and contributes to biodiversity.

Bird cherry care and location

The wild cherry thrives in sunny, warm locations. It grows best in nutrient-rich, loose, and well-aerated soils with a slightly calcareous to neutral pH. Loamy soils with good drainage are ideal – soils that are too wet or too dry should be avoided. Here are the most important points for caring for the wild cherry:

  • Choose a sunny to partially shaded location.
  • Make sure there is enough space for the expansive crown.
  • The soil should be humus-rich, nutrient-rich and permeable.
  • A mulch layer can help stabilize soil moisture.
  • Especially in the first years after planting, consistent Care important to build a stable root system and a healthy crown.

Pruning bird cherry

A regular Video editing Pruning is not strictly necessary for wild cherry trees, but it can help to form a beautiful, even crown when they are young. Later maintenance – such as removing dead or crossing branches – also promotes the tree's vitality.

The best time for pruning is late summer (August/September). At this time, cuts heal faster and the risk of gummosis is lower than in spring. If you're using the wild cherry for fruiting, targeted thinning can improve the harvest. However, in natural gardens, it can simply be left to grow naturally – its growth habit is inherently attractive.

Do you need to fertilize bird cherries?

On good soils, the bird cherry grows without additional fertilization If you want to encourage growth—for example, in sandy or depleted soils—you can incorporate some compost or mature manure in the spring. A layer of bark humus or leaf mulch also helps improve soil structure and slowly release nutrients. Avoid artificial fertilizers if possible—they disrupt soil life and can lead to excessive shoot growth.

Water bird cherry properly!

The wild cherry has a medium water requirement. Young trees, in particular, require a regular, consistent water supply during their first years. In hot summers, you should also Giessen – especially if the tree is growing on light or sandy soils. The soil should not dry out, but also not be permanently wet. Ideally, watering should be done in the morning or evening when evaporation is low. This allows the water to seep deep into the soil and reach the root zone.

Watering is particularly easy and effective with the baumbad watering bagYou place it around the trunk, close the zipper, and fill it with 75 to 100 liters of water. This water is slowly released into the soil over several hours – directly into the root zone. This method not only saves water but also ensures a particularly sustainable supply – especially during dry periods. The bag is easy to handle, reusable, and can be easily combined with other bags for larger trees.
