Dawn redwood origin
The dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), also known as the Chinese redwood, metasequoia, or water fir or water larch, belongs to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). This tree is considered a living fossil because it was long known only as a fossil before living specimens were discovered in China in the 1940s. Today, the dawn redwood grows in botanical gardens and parks worldwide.

Dawn redwood care and location
The dawn redwood prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with plenty of space. It thrives best in moist, deep soils with good drainage. It tolerates swampy or temporarily flooded locations. Young trees should be protected from severe frost in their first years. For the giant sequoia, a mulch layer be supportive as it helps to retain moisture in the soil and protect the roots.
If you want to plant a dawn redwood, keep in mind that this tree can grow up to 35 meters tall and up to one meter per year.
Cutting dawn redwood
A regular Video editing The dawn redwood doesn't require pruning. If you still want to prune it, late winter or early spring is ideal, before the tree begins to sprout. During this dormant period, the tree tolerates pruning best.
Fertilizing dawn redwood
The dawn redwood generally requires no additional fertilization. In nutrient-poor soil, a light application of organic compost or horn shavings in the spring can support growth.
In this article you will find more information on the topic Fertilizing trees.
Watering the dawn redwood
Young dawn redwoods should be watered regularly, especially during dry summer months. Mature trees are adaptable and can even cope with temporary drought. Since the dawn redwood prefers moist locations, a consistent water supply is ideal.
For the Watering trees, we have summarized the most important points for you:
- To ensure that the water can really reach the root area, you should give a lot of water at once, at least 75 – 100 liters of water in one watering.
- Make sure the water is released as slowly as possible. This is important so the soil can absorb it. If the water is added too quickly, it will run off the surface, as dry soil can only absorb a small amount of water. Therefore, we recommend using tree watering bags.
- The tree bath irrigation bags They release water drop by drop into the soil through small holes over a period of several hours. This ensures even soil moisture throughout the entire root zone, allowing the roots to absorb the water easily. Using the irrigation bags, the water actually reaches the tree.
- For larger trees, you can also attach the tree watering bags to a stake and place them in the root area of the tree.
- If you are not using tree watering bags, we recommend watering the tree early in the morning or late in the evening.
Great idea, easy handling and everything from ordering to delivery.
