Scarlet Oak Origin
The scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea) is native to eastern North America. Its natural range extends from northern Canada to the southern states of the USA. It prefers to grow in mixed forests, on fresh to moist soils, and on mountain slopes. The scarlet oak is a large, stately tree that can grow up to 25 meters tall and about 15 meters wide.
It owes its name to the striking scarlet autumn color of its leaves. This color makes it particularly popular as a decorative tree for parks and avenues. The leaves are deeply lobed, glossy, and bright green before turning intense red in autumn.
Scarlet Oak Care and Location
The scarlet oak prefers sunny to slightly partially shaded locations. Deep, humus-rich, and slightly acidic to neutral soil (ideal pH between 5,5 and 7,0) is particularly important. It thrives particularly well in fresh to slightly moist locations and tolerates only short periods of drought.
- Plant it in a sunny location with enough space for its broad crown.
- Avoid heavily compacted, heavy or calcareous soils.
- A layer of bark or leaves ensures a balanced moisture level and protects the roots.
- Young trees require regular watering. Due to its resistance to air pollution, the scarlet oak is ideal for inner-city green spaces, parks, and spacious gardens.
Pruning scarlet oak
The scarlet oak tolerates pruning, but does not normally require intensive regular pruningOnly remove dead, diseased, or obstructive branches. The best time to do this is late fall or winter, when the tree is dormant and the risk of injury is minimal. In the first few years, you can perform light training pruning to promote a stable and well-shaped tree crown. Ensure a balanced distribution of the main branches to ensure future stability.
Do you need to fertilize scarlet oaks?
The scarlet oak does not normally need additional fertilization, provided it's planted in nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil. If you notice that your soil is nutrient-poor or depleted, you can spread organic fertilizer such as mature compost or well-rotted manure around the tree in the spring.
Also one mulch layer Mulch made from leaves or bark helps keep the soil fertile in the long term and also ensures moisture retention. Chemical fertilizers are unnecessary and should be avoided if possible.
Water scarlet oak properly!
Especially young scarlet oaks are sensitive to drought and require reliable and regular irrigationThe soil should be kept evenly moist, but not soggy. Regular watering is especially important during long hot summer periods to ensure the health and growth of the scarlet oak. Water in the morning or evening to allow the water to penetrate deeper into the soil. Conventional watering with a garden hose or watering can often results in runoff or evaporation too quickly.
This is exactly where the baumbad watering bag A practical and efficient solution. The watering bag is placed around the trunk, zipped shut, and filled with 75 to 100 liters of water. The water is slowly and continuously released directly into the root zone. This saves water and ensures that the scarlet oak is optimally supplied. Additionally, the watering bag reduces water evaporation through the ground cover.
For larger, older plants, you can combine multiple bags to ensure a sufficient supply. Installation is quick and easy, making regular watering easy and stress-free.
