Tree of Heaven Origin
The tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a deciduous tree belonging to the Simaroubaceae family. Originally from China, it was introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant in the 18th century. Since then, it has spread to many parts of the world. Trees of heaven are able to grow even in poor soil conditions and are therefore often considered weeds. They can reach heights of up to 30 meters and have a broad, spreading crown.
In Chinese mythology, the yixing tree symbolizes resilience, strength, and longevity, and is often planted in temple gardens to bring good luck and prosperity.
Tree of heaven leaves are The leaves are pinnate and can grow up to 60 cm long. They are glossy on the upper surface and matte on the underside. Tree of Heaven blooms from May to July. The flowers are small, greenish-white to yellowish, and grow in large panicles (up to 30–40 cm). The Tree of Heaven is one of the fastest-growing trees in Europe.
This tree species is classified as an invasive neophyte in Germany and Switzerland. Its spread can negatively impact native species and ecosystems. There are regional bans, restrictions, and control obligations.
