Sweetgum origin

The sweetgum (Liquidambar) is a deciduous tree belonging to the family Altingiaceae. It is native to North America and Asia, with some subspecies found in Central America. In Europe, the sweetgum reaches a height of 20 to 30 meters and an age of up to 400 years. Its existence is estimated to be about 65 million years old. It was introduced to Europe as an ornamental tree in the 17th century. The leaves of the sweetgum are green, turning red, orange, and yellow in autumn. The flowers appear in spring and are small and inconspicuous.
